I am about to buy a man made diamond ring for $100. Tdw 1.20kt and the center solitaire is .70kt on a 18kt white gold band. Is it really worth it??

Some great insight there Honnie. My only contestation with your comment is that a lot of people don’t have documentation because they are political regugees, or there is a war going on, and these documents are either unable to be obtained, or were lost during the wars and so on. I think you made a valid point, but it is not always as simple as having documents. Remember what happended in the Soviet Bloc in the 60s- people were gunned down for trying to leave their country. Applying for a passport from a despotic government is often out of the question, and that is therefore why we have refugees. Unfortunatly, the myth that refugees should have documents doesn’t support reality. Most of these people flee for their lives with nothing but the clothes on their back. Remmeber the begining of the program when the host takes all their documentation and explains why he did it? There are some who do try to twart the system, not denying this. But the big picture is far more complex and system that requires documentation is one that doesn’t consider what is actually happening in the world. The concept of a refugee refutes the notion that migration can be orderley.

But otherwise, great comment and very insightful.

compelling programmes- not unless we walk in their shoes…….will we get to lknow why they want to come here……..
But illegals should not come without documentation- there will have to be a better system in place to assist these desperate people…..They cannot be allowed into the community- we must stop the boats entering our borders…..
I came to this country nearlly 60 years ago and call my self a very proud Australian.We came with 7 family members and now our family adds up to more than 70. Many have made incrediable contributions to our new adopted country- and feel humbly proud.
Excellent work SBS – more programmes like that please.- thank you

There is still consihderable influence of false vanity about diamonds in society in spite of new process inventions making synthetic diamonds far superior to natural diamonds in crystal qualities.I some times feel that regarding social progress we still lag behind science at least 200 years.People like you make research and make humanity bring socially to the present scientific era.You deserve all appreciation.

What’s up, Hallam? I saw your posting on Nick Macdonald’s site about becoming an aid worker. I think we may be in similar positions. I just completed my master’s in health administration and have an undergrad degree in human geography. I have been actively pursuing a career in aid work but, as I’m sure you’re aware of, it is very hard to get started. Have you graduated yet or started to work in the humanitarian sector?

Hey Kia!

No, Indonesia is not party to the 1951 Convention, which is why so many asylum seekers come via Indonesia. Indonesia has no protection of refugees, and most of them are detained or live in limbo with no rights or protections. Most make the journey to Australia, because it is party to the Convention. No refugee can apply for asylum in Indonesia because it never signed the 1951 Convention or 1967 Protocol, so that’s why those that make it to Indonesia then try to get to Australia, rather than stay in Indonesia, because staying there means they have no rights and are virtually stateless.
